This nine-day package places you in Upper Egypt for that morning, then uses the surrounding days for the sites most travellers come to Egypt for.
You begin in Cairo with the Giza plateau and the Grand Egyptian Museum, fly south to Luxor for the eclipse itself, and continue by Nile cruise through Edfu and Kom Ombo to Aswan, finishing with Philae and an Abu Simbel excursion. Itinerary
Day-by-day plan.
A full day on the Giza plateau with your Egyptologist: the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, the Sphinx and the valley temple. In the afternoon, the Grand Egyptian Museum and its Tutankhamun galleries.
Drive south to Saqqara for the Step Pyramid of Djoser and on to Memphis, the Old Kingdom capital. Transfer to the airport for the short flight to Luxor and check in ahead of eclipse day.
Karnak and Luxor temples in the cooler hours, with the afternoon kept light. Your guide confirms timings, viewing position and eye-protection arrangements for the following morning.
An early start for the viewing site. Totality near Luxor runs to roughly six minutes and twenty seconds — long enough to observe the corona properly rather than in a rush. The rest of the day is deliberately unhurried.
Cross to the West Bank for the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari and the Colossi of Memnon, then embark your cruise ship for lunch on board.
Sail north to south with stops at the Temple of Horus at Edfu, among the best-preserved in Egypt, and the double temple of Kom Ombo on the riverbank.
Visit the High Dam and the island temple of Philae. An excursion to Abu Simbel takes in the twin temples of Ramses II, relocated in the 1960s above the rising waters of Lake Nasser.
Breakfast and a private transfer to Aswan airport for your onward or homebound flight.
